London based duo Girlhood are set to release their debut single ‘My Boy’ on Team Talk Records; a stripped down ’90s dance infused track that was recorded in a narrowboat on Regent’s Canal.

The pair met back in late 2015, when both members were looking for a fresh creative outlook. Christian previously performed with the band Elephant, and Kenya-raised Tessa wanted to work on a new sound away from her neo-soul roots. In an effort to revamp his musical approach, Christian sold his laptop and bought an iPad to mess around with different cuts, “using touch technology and manipulating sound waves in real time”.

Both Christian and Tessa bring their own unique backgrounds to ‘My Boy’. On one hand there’s Tessa’s mellow Lauryn Hill vibe, and on the other Christian’s 21st century homemade beats that give their sound a distinct edge. Their influences include The Fugees and ’80s hip-hop, evidentially heard in the single. It’s a sweet, summertime tune with jazz undertones that instantly leaves you wanting more from Girlhood.

Girlhood are currently working on their debut EP which is expected to be released in early 2017, and we can’t wait. Check out ‘My Boy’ below:
